Propane is sold either by the gallon or by weight. Physical properties of propane by the gallon are 4.24 pounds per gallon. For simple calculations, a 20-pound cylinder (grill) will hold approximately 4.6 gallons. All deliveries made by truck to a domestic propane tank are sold by the gallon. Generally, all small propane cylinders considers DOT cylinders are sold by the pound.
Demand is the main factor influencing the price of propane. Whether or not demand in your area is at a peak level is insignificant. What is significant is whether or not there is demand for propane anywhere. For example, the temperature in the Midwest United States is extremely cold which increases the demand for propane. The price can fluctuate depending on unforeseen political, economic, and various other factors. Transportation costs are a major factor in determining the retail price of propane. Put simply, propane needs to be transported to the Midwest from other parts of the country.
Price shopping isn't bad. However, propane companies can track usage of propane with the help of computer programs tailored to the propane industry which enables them to get an accurate idea about the requirements of propane by the customer.
In the mindset of saving a few bucks, getting propane from various companies will lead to removing their history completely and forecasting will be useless. A continuous relationship with an established propane company is very significant in the overall picture of safety and service. Keep in mind that a continuous relationship is also an important factor of comfort, reliable supply of propane, and family warmth during unseasonably warm weather.
If you’re renting a propane tank, you don’t have to pay for the maintenance of the tank. Also, you are not responsible for the repair cost due to faults with the propane tank. On the other hand, if you own your tank, you’re responsible for all the repairs and maintenance of the tank and its related parts.
Leak tests are necessary when there is an interruption in the flow of gas for any reason. NFPA 54 (2006), 8.2.3 states that "Immediately after the gas is turned on into a new system or into a system that has been initially restored after an interruption of service, the piping system shall be tested for leakage. If leakage is indicated, the gas supply shall be shut off until the necessary repairs have been made."
For easy installation, all propane piping, connections, and fitting are threaded. During the joining process, the propane connections are coated with a pipe joint compound that lubricates and seals the fittings.
The propane plumbing system is at a constant pressure during normal usage. The pipe joint compound will expand during normal pressurized usage and will retract if the system loses pressure. Out of gas situations resulting in the loss of gas pressure to the gas system may lead to leaks.
The leak test is important to indicate if any leaks may be present within the propane piping system due to the interruption of service or out-of-gas situation. It is required by law to perform a leak test. Eliminating any leaks that are found will keep you and your family as safe as possible.
